Last night Carter didn't want to go to bed and put up what seems to be his nightly fight. My mom happened to call in the middle of the "fight", and I told her what was going on. When she talked to him, she said, "Carter if you go to sleep in your own bed right now, something magic will happen."
That got him in his bed, but then he continued the whining. I reminded him what Nana had said and he asked me what would happen.
"Well, when you wake up in the morning, I think there will be a surprise under your pillow."
"Well, who's gonna put it there?"
"It's magic!"
"...(pause).... Is it a big fish?"
"...(pause)... yes... A Big Magic Fish!"
His eyes got wide, he smiled, and his head hit the pillow. And sure enough, in the morning, we found that the Big Magic Fish had left some Smarties under his pillow. Carter's first response: "They're round and round like wheels and meatballs!!!"
Could this child be any more random?

I feel like I will tell that to my children one day. The tale of the Magic Fish that brought meatball shaped candy to Carter.
