The Tale of the 3 Blankets

When Carter was born, a lady in our ward made him a blanket. I added it to the collection of blankets I had received and ended up not using it much. But then came the day when Carter found it. It had fringes all along the sides that he loved to play with. He insisted on having that blanket with him 24/7.
I didn't love the pattern on this particular blanket, and as he got older, the light blue bears seemed somewhat babyish. I decided to introduce a soft, solid blue blanket in attempt to replace the bear blanket. Well, Carter ended up loving the solid blue blanket, but refused to give up the blanket with the fringes. This resulted in the need for two blankets 24/7.
I decided to try a different approach. I knew Carter loved those fringes, so I made another blanket that had the exact pattern of fringes. I was, however, careful to select a "manly" football fabric with red, dark blue and green. I was very impressed with my ability to duplicate the blanket, and presented it to him with exaggerated excitement about the footballs and the quarterbacks. He loved it!

But he still loved those other two blankets.

So my plan backfired. In an attempt to switch one blanket for another, I ended up getting Carter hooked on three blankets that he had to have 24/7. For the longest time, you could see two legs carrying a ball of blankets with a head of red hair slightly showing on top.
Fortunately, last year we were able to get rid of blanket number 2. We're now down to two, and he does prefer one over the other. The bad news is... it's the original blanket with light blue teddy bears.

Lesson learned: Getting to change Carter's stubborn mind about something is usually more of a headache than it's worth.

The trial of motherhood. Why don't we get a mother's handbook at the hospital instead of the stupid diaper bag? I just read your comment on Des' blog. I'm glad I'm not the only one who blogs at 2 AM. We need to get together.

That reminds me----when Jeff was 2 we decided to "lose" his tiny baby blanket. BIG MISTAKE----he immediately became attached to our QUEEN SIZED bedspread.(real convenient at church).

I love your stories!!
